Fungishop - Growkits

Magic mushroom grow kits contain everything you need to grow Psilocybe cubensis mushrooms at home (up to five flushes). Each of the grow kits you can buy at Azarius includes:

• Instructions
• Perlite
• Fully colonised rye cake
• Vermiculite (casing layer)
• Grow bag

Cultivators need only follow the easy-to-read instructions to kickstart the growing process and place their grow kit in a warm location.

You’ll need to follow a simple 7-step process to use your magic mushroom grow kits. All grow kits have written instructions included, but to summarise:

• Soak the substrate for 9–12 hours.
• Pour clean water into the included grow bag.
• Place the grow kit inside the bag and fasten it with paperclips.
• Once the first pins appear, refresh the bag with air.
• 2–4 weeks later, your mushrooms will be ready to harvest.
• Repeat the process for multiple flushes.

Magic mushroom grow kits require minimal effort and are one of the simplest ways to grow mushrooms at home. As long as you have a suitable warm location and can attend to them daily to refresh the air in the grow bag, you’ll have an abundance of mushrooms in as little as 3 weeks. Grow kits are a straightforward, beginner-friendly step into the world of magic mushroom cultivation.

Magic mushrooms grow in many parts of the world, showcasing their resilience and versatility. However, they require certain temperature and humidity ranges to thrive, and harvesting spores from wild Psilocybe cubensis is notoriously tricky. There is also the risk of contamination if tools and growing areas aren’t sanitised correctly. That’s why fully colonised grow kits with healthy mycelium remove much of the difficulty associated with magic mushroom cultivation.

The exact timescale differs slightly depending on the strain of magic mushroom. Most grow kits will be ready to harvest in as little as 3 weeks, although some species can take 6 weeks or more. It’s important not to get impatient and rush the process or try to harvest before the veils under the mushroom caps start to darken. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on valuable potency.

The magic mushroom grow kits from Azarius include everything you need to cultivate shrooms at home. To kickstart the growing process, you simply need to add water and place the kit in a warm, well-lit location. However, if you want to improve the size of your flushes, a mushroom heat mat and a hygrometer can help you dial in the ideal conditions.

All magic mushroom grow kits from Azarius are prepared to the same high standards, including 100% colonised substrate with healthy mycelium. While some Psilocybe cubensis strains will take longer than others to fruit, all kits can achieve multiple flushes with the proper care. As such, it’s best to pick the grow kit based on your personal interest or preference.

Unopened and stored in the refrigerator (ideally at 3–5°C), our magic mushroom grow kits will remain in “hibernation mode” for 3–4 weeks. You’ll also want to keep the grow kit inside an airtight plastic bag to prevent contamination. Opening the grow kit kickstarts the growing process, so you’ll need to follow the steps outlined in the instructions or risk a failed harvest.

Provided conditions are optimal, each magic mushroom grow kit should produce at least three flushes. The amount of mushrooms per flush will depend on growing conditions and the strain. Temperatures below or above the ideal threshold will slow the development of fruiting bodies. However, some strains can produce more flushes, although it's important to be aware that yields decrease with each successive flush.

The legality of magic mushrooms differs vastly from one country to the next. As such, it’s the customer's responsibility to check the laws in their local area. Any further questions regarding legality should be directed to your local authority for the most up-to-date information.

All members of the Psilocybe cubensis family need the same conditions to thrive, so no one strain is easier to grow than another. They do, however, have differing potency and yield potential. Conditions to manage include:

• Temperature: Approx 24–27°C
• Humidity: 85–95% relative humidity
• Light: Indirect sunlight for several hours a day

If you meet these conditions, all of the magic mushroom grow kits sold by Azarius will have the same level of success.

Each magic mushroom grow kit can be reused up to three times by repeating the steps outlined in the step-by-step guide. It’s important to know that with each flush, the yield potential reduces, so your first flush will always be your most rewarding. However, it’s still possible to achieve decent harvests, flush after flush, provided you keep conditions optimal.

You should store your freshly harvested mushrooms in an airtight container in the fridge (ideally 3–5°C). Mushrooms are 90–95% water, so to maintain their freshness, you must prevent them from drying out or getting too hot.

Magic mushrooms provide a suite of mind-altering effects thanks to their abundance of psilocybin. When consumed, this naturally occurring psychedelic is converted to psilocin, which acts upon serotonin receptors in brain cells to induce hallucinations, auditory changes, time distortion, mental clarity, deep introspection, and much more. The intensity of these effects varies according to how many mushrooms you consume.

All Azarius grow kits are prepared in a sterile environment, ensuring 100% colonised substrate and healthy mycelium. We take the utmost care to ensure the kit is ready to grow when it arrives at your door. If you follow the instructions outlined in the step-by-step guide, you should achieve multiple successful flushes.

Maintaining a consistent temperature of 24–27°C throughout the cultivation process will ensure the best possible yields. However, for many growers, temperatures will naturally fluctuate depending on the location of the kit in your home. A heat mat stabilises temperatures to help achieve the best possible results.

Magic mushrooms require indirect sunlight daily to develop mature fruiting bodies. However, in the evening, the mushrooms must spend time in darkness, too, so you’ll want to shield them from any artificial light at night. If you choose to only run artificial grow lights, then a daylight fluorescent tube, emitting in the 6000–7000 kelvin range for roughly 12 hours, is ideal.

Our magic mushroom grow kits are designed so that once the kit has been pre-soaked and the inside of the grow bag sprayed with water (only once during setup), the mushrooms no longer need watering to maintain the optimal relative humidity. It’s crucial that you follow the steps outlined in the instructions to ensure the kit has the correct moisture level to reach harvest successfully.

Fresh air exchange is crucial to preventing mould. This is why we recommend that growers refresh the air inside the grow bag by opening it 1–3 times daily. Not only do mushrooms need oxygen to grow, but mould only occurs when humidity is high and fresh air is lacking. Maintain this daily housekeeping throughout the growing process to keep mould at bay.

Poor hygiene or handling can lead to unwanted bacteria, mould, or spores contaminating your substrate and preventing your mycelium from fruiting. Because of this, closing windows when preparing your grow kit, regular hand washing (with antibacterial soap), and cleaning work surfaces should keep contaminants at bay. Latex gloves when handling your grow kit can also help prevent the buildup of unwanted bacteria.

The easiest way to detect signs of contamination is by observing the colour of the mycelium in your substrate. Yellow or brown mycelium could indicate bacterial contamination, while green, pink, and black are all types of mould. Unfortunately, given the size of the grow kit, you’ll need to carefully dispose of it and clean any surfaces and/or equipment before preparing another.

Fluctuations in temperature can stunt the growth and development of fruit bodies, leading to substandard harvests. If you cannot maintain the optimal temperatures naturally, a heat mat provides the stability needed to ensure high-yielding flushes. Ideally, you want to maintain a consistent temperature range of 24–27°C.

The key to harvesting is keeping a close eye on the veil (the thin membrane on the underside of the cap). You don’t want the veil to break and release spores into the substrate, as this can result in subpar flushes. Therefore, pick the shrooms just before the veil tears (it will darken and sag). If you notice the veil darkening, don’t wait—it’s generally better (and safer) to harvest early than late.

Contamination is the main reason a mushroom grow kit will fail, so adopting excellent housekeeping routines is paramount. Before attempting a second harvest, ensure that all work surfaces have been wiped down with an antibacterial cleaner, windows are shut, hands washed, and the grow kit remains sealed until you are ready to trigger the growing process.

There are many ways to dry magic mushrooms, but one of the simplest is air drying them in a cupboard until they are bone dry. For more consistent results, consider a dehydrator, as the gentle heat source and constant airflow will remove excess moisture quickly. The main thing to remember is managing relative humidity, which you’ll need to keep below 55% to help the mushrooms dry out properly.
